This guide will help students enrolled in ENGL 1030 find resources to complete the major assignments

Where to Find Newspaper Articles

You may want to start with local resources like newspapers or university sources to see what is being said about your topic locally. Remember there are differences in the kinds of information you find in newspapers:

  • Opinion pieces are about persuading and expressing personal viewpoints.

  • News reporting is about informing with facts, without taking sides.

  • Analysis is about interpreting and providing insight into the facts, often with some opinion-based context.

  • Investigative journalism seeks to uncover hidden truths and often involves deep, original research. Also referred to as long form journalism or stories that cover a subject in much greater depth than a standard news article.

  • Lifestyle pieces are about human interest and cultural topics, typically more informal.

Examples:
  • Opinion: A columnist writing about why a particular political candidate is the best choice in an upcoming election.

  • News Reporting: A report on a new policy announced by the government, explaining the details, who is involved, and how it affects citizens.

  • Analysis: A piece that looks at the potential impact of the new policy, breaking down how it might change the political landscape or economy.

  • Investigative Journalism: An exposé uncovering corruption within a local government or corporation.

  • Lifestyle: A profile of a local artist, a review of a new movie, or a piece on emerging fashion trends.
