Transformative agreements are innovative contracts between academic institutions and publishers that aim to shift the traditional subscription-based publishing model towards open access.

Open access - WikipediaClemson University Libraries continue to seek new opportunities for participation in transformative agreements (also referred to as read and publish agreements).

These licenses provide authors affiliated with Clemson University the option to publish open access (OA) content in gold or hybrid OA journals at no cost. In many models, publishing an OA article comes with a substantial fee, referred to as an Article Processing Charge (APC).

Below is a list of the agreements in which Clemson University is participating along with details about how that specific agreement functions.

  • APC Process: OA Dashboard, managed by assigned Clemson University rep
  • Limits: No limit on APC approvals, but subscription pricing will change to reflect increased submissions
  • Other Details: ACM will deposit a copy of each article into the institutional repository

AIP Publishing American Institute of Physics - Wikipedia 

  • APC Process: Submissions to participating journals can be covered under the agreement
  • Limits: 19 articles in 2023, 20 articles in 2024, and 21 articles in 2025
  • Other Details: Authors are assigned a CC BY license

  • APC Process: Submissions are approved through RightsLink, managed by assigned Clemson University rep
  • Limits: Unlimited submissions are permitted under the agreement

Canadian Science Publishing Canadian Science Publishing - Wikipedia

  • APC Process: Use standard article submission process
  • Limits: Page charges are billed despite APC coverage for the following four hybrid journals: Canadian Journal of Animal Science, Canadian Journal of Plant Science, Canadian Journal of Soil Science, and Transactions of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering.

  • APC Process: Standard submission process with Clemson affiliation identified
  • Limits: Unlimited submissions available
  • Other Details: Renewal terms based on average submissions from previous years

  • APC Process: An assigned Approval Manager reviews submissions that do not provide clear Clemson University affiliation.
  • Limits: No institutional limits, but a pool of tokens are shared across institutions in North Carolina and South Carolina and are subject to becoming exhausted prior to the conclusion of the calendar year.
  • Currently, only hybrid journals are eligible for full APC coverage.  Fully open access journals are not eligible.

  • APC Process: Standard submission process as outlined on site
  • Limits: No institutional limits, but a pool of tokens are shared across institutions in North Carolina and South Carolina and are subject to becoming exhausted prior to the conclusion of the calendar year
  • Articles eligible for OA funding will be governed by the following agreement specifications:  
    • Responsible corresponding authors must be affiliated with Clemson University or a participating institution within our agreement.
    • Restricted to article types (see file below) that are primary research and review articles, including but not limited to original articles, case studies, reviews, short communications.  
    • Articles must either be accepted for publication in a Wiley hybrid journal (see file below) or be submitted to a Wiley fully OA or Hindawi journal (see file below) on or from 1 January 2024 onwards.
