It focuses on problems that arise in and for the work life of engineers and scientists. It serves practitioners, educators and students, and individuals interested in professional and research ethics.
The mission of the Online Ethics Center continues to be:
to provide engineers and engineering students with resources for understanding and addressing ethically significant problems that arise in their work, and
to serve those who are promoting learning and advancing the understanding of responsible research and practice in engineering.
The first interdisciplinary center for ethics to focus on the professions, CSEP continues to be one of the nation's leading centers for practical and professional ethics. It is known for its work on ethics in engineering and science and in related areas of business. CSEP promotes innovative teaching. It generates professional ethics courses at IIT and assists faculty at other universities to prepare for teaching professional ethics and to develop courses and programs.
HUBzero was specifically designed to help a scientific community share resources and work together with one another. But each hub is more than just a repository of information. It is a place where researchers and educators can share data and simulation tools online. Users can launch simulations and post-process results with an ordinary web browser--without having to download, compile, or install any code. The tools they access are not just web forms, but powerful graphical tools that support visualization and comparison of results.
The goal of the center is to increase the awareness of the professional and ethical obligations and responsibilities entrusted to individuals who practice engineering, and to encourage cooperation among individuals, universities, professional and technical societies, and business organizations with regard to engineering ethics and professionalism issues.
