When using Natural Language Search (NLS) mode, the user will have an option to Show refined query, which will display a Boolean version of their natural language query. This transparency allows researchers to see how their queries are interpreted by the system, serving as a verification tool to ensure the AI correctly understands their intent.
In EBSCO experiences, a user can choose to use both NLS mode and traditional search modes in a single session to leverage the strengths of each: starting with NLS mode for broad, intuitive searches and switching to traditional search for precise, targeted queries, or to verify how the system interprets their natural language input. This flexibility allows users to adapt their search approach based on their specific needs and preferences.
When enabled and utilized, NLS mode is compatible with existing search management functionality such as using Search Alerts and saving searches.
When NLS mode is enabled in a given profile, end users may opt to turn it on or off.
How does Natural Language Search mode work?
When a user initiates a search using NLS mode, the query is sent to a Large Language Model (LLM). The LLM assesses both the intent and context of the query, combining enhanced AI capabilities with EBSCO's existing search algorithm. Please note that EBSCO’s NLS mode does not collect user or query data for training purposes.
Is NLS mode available in the EBSCO Mobile App?
In the EBSCO Mobile App, NLS mode is utilized when it is set as the default search mode for the profile being searched. However, user-facing options to switch between search modes are not available in the app.
How is the quality of Natural Language Search mode’s decisions ensured?
EBSCO employs a rigorous quality assessment process, including Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) reviews, internal testing by search SMEs, and user testing with students, academic researchers, librarians and clinicians . This quality assessment helps refine the AI's output, improve accuracy, and protect against biases in the AI’s responses
Is AI Natural Language Search mode available via API?
No, but this is in consideration for future roadmap inclusion.
Does the AI Natural Language Search mode require personal user accounts?
No, personalization into MyEBSCO accounts is not required to use NLS mode.
Does my institution need to purchase AI Natural Language Search mode?
No, any institutions with access to a new UI interface can enable in new UI interfaces and profiles.
How is EBSCO handling ethical concerns related to the use of AI?
Please see EBSCO Information Services Defines Guiding Principles for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (11 March, 2024) as well as EBSCO’s AI Tenets.
EBSCO is committed to responsible and ethical use of AI in our research experiences. To learn more about how AI is used to support Natural Language Searching, visit: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Transparency Fact Sheet - Natural Language Search
NLS also works well with voice-entered searching, for a more accessible and mobile-friendly search experience.
