Free Educational Resources for Athletes and Tutors: Textbook Rental

Program Overview

The Cooper Library Textbook Reserve Program is a pilot project between the Clemson University Libraries and Undergraduate Student Government.

  • Length of pilot - August 2019 through May 2020
  • Total of $10,000 in funding from Libraries and Student Government
  • Funding split into 2 semesters - Fall 2019 and Spring 2020
  • Items are rented from B&N Bookstore and will not be added as a permanent part of the collection.
  • Texts were selected based on those classes with 100 or more students enrolled and classes with high drop/fail rates.
  • Class texts were then analyzed and the highest priced texts were pulled from greatest cost to least to fill the $5000 budget. (Obviously, not all were selected. We stopped when we hit $5000.)

The Clemson Libraries are here to support students and faculty during the move to online learning in response to the coronavirus outbreak. There are many ways we can provide you with expert help and services while you are working online, even though our facilities are closed.

Due to our textbooks being rentals, we are unable to provide individual electronic access to these titles. This form can be used to request a scan of a portion from one of our textbooks on reserve. It is for your personal use only and is only intended for use during the time when University public health measures prevent access to your personal copy or a copy on Reserve at the Library.

Program Information

The Cooper Library Textbook Reserve Program is a partnership between the Clemson University Libraries and Clemson Undergraduate Student Government.

  • The program began in Fall 2019. The program was suspended in March 2020 because of COVID-19 and restarted in Fall 2021. It will continue while there is student use and demand.
  • A total of $10,000 in funding from Libraries and Student Government is provided for the program each year.
  • Funding split into 2 semesters, fall and spring. The Libraries purchase books each semester.
  • Items are purchased from B&N Bookstore, Amazon, Chegg and other sources and will remain on Course Reserves while assigned as a required textbook for a class.
  • Texts are selected for courses with high enrollment, high drop/fail rates, and large numbers of Pell Grant students.
  • The collection is growing and we seek student input on the program, as well as recommendations for purchase. Some course textbooks may be available in the Libraries circulation collection or as an ebook. Search the Libraries website in the "Search for articles, books, and more" box for the textbook title to see if there is a copy.

Textbooks are available for checkout at the Library Services Desk in Cooper Library. Loans are for 4 hours at a time. You may take the textbook out of the Library, but must return it within 4 hours.

Students may also want to check their Course Resource Lists in Canvas to see if additional course readings are available online.

Due to the nature of our textbook program, we are unable to provide individual electronic access to these titles.
