The K8 Science website is designed at the Baylor College of Medicine, with the support of a wide range of school district, foundation, and national grants, as an "online educational resource for educators, students, and parents," utilizing "state-of-the-art technology to provide instant access to reliable, up-to-date information and educational tools in life, physical, and earth/space sciences appropriate for grades K-8." The website makes use of streaming video presentations by "national thought leaders in elementary and middle school science, classroom management, science standards, and other key issues in education," a slide library of "exciting and relevant lesson plans and activities from hundreds of searchable slides ... editors' news picks on current science news, and teacher resources with downloadable inquiry science lessons" designed to meet national and state education standards.
This website is parented by Ed Tech Teacher Inc., an educational technology professional development provider that also publishes Teaching English with Technology and the award-winning Best of History Web Sites (CH, Jan'03, 40-2546). Although professional development opportunities are prominently displayed, the real jewels of the site are the extensive annotated links to free online resources. The coeditors clearly explain the philosophical underpinning of the site, which is the belief that teachers need to be taught to integrate technology. They also provide exemplary models for curricular integration. The site is easy to navigate, with key topics listed on the left, each with an expandable menu for more resources. The main categories are Lessons and Activities, Presentations and Multimedia, Discussions and Collaboration, Research and Writing, Assessment and Rubrics, and Mobile Technologies.
